Our Village: Kritsa

Kritsa is one of the oldest and most beautiful villages in Crete, built amphitheatrically on a rock hill, named Kastellos, surrounded by olive groves, at an altitude of 375m. During the Middle Ages was thought to be the largest village in Crete. Kritsa has been destroyed many times during the last centuries because it participated in all of Crete's revolutions.

It is located 10 km from Agios Nikolaos and has about 2200 inhabitants, which live in different neighborhoods named Palemilos, Koukistres, Christos and Pergiolikia. When Kritsa is lit up in the evening it has the form of a scorpion.

In Kritsa people keep the old Cretan customs and the traditions and are considered one of the most important centers of weaving art. You can walk through the narrow streets and buy souvenirs from tourist shops.

Near the village, 3km to the north, are the ruins of the ancient Greek city "Lato Etera" which was famous as one of the most powerful towns in Crete, with two acropolies. One kilometer before the entrance of the village is located the old Byzantine church of Panagia Kera with unique, in technique and importance, Byzantine frescoes (13th and 14th century). There is a parking area where you can let your car and admire the beautiful church. Finally you can also meet our beautiful Gorge and walk through the Kritsa Gorge to Tapes or to Lato.

From Kritsa there is an interesting and spectacular climb to the Plateau of Katharo. It is possible to go by car(16 Km from the Village, the road is  asphalt and the view to Mirabello, Agios Nikolaos and Kalo Chorio is unique during all the drive until Katharo Plateau ),  or on foot following an old path ( 3 or 4 hours walk).
